Tolliver lies near death and Doris drifts at mercy of a flying creature high on a table mountain. Alan March awakens with memory gone and climbs toward rescue, doubting his own life as night falls and fatigue overwhelms him.
Chapter XIV follows North awaking from ten hours of unconsciousness on a foggy morning. He slowly regains sensation and strength, testing limbs and senses, then recalls Doris Tolliver and The Flying Man as questions of what happened flood his mind.
North spots the Dragon and returns to aid Doris as the perilous pursuit by air continues. March and Tolliver brace for a dangerous ascent toward the summit while the unknown creature keeps Doris under watchful gaze in the moonlit canyon. The crew debates landing risks and plots a foot surprise on their elusive foe amid night shadows and waning strength.
