Tower City edged Valley City 20 to 19 in a hard fought Saturday basketball game. Nelson starred for Tower City as fans and reporters hailed it as the best game yet in Tower City. Mandan and Minot matches loom next, with weather delaying return plans for the team’s supporters.
Marshalltown Iowa Times-Republican notes officers of a North Dakota regiment entertained by the local club after detrainment en route to Fort Snelling. Officers and enlisted men spoke of coming back to the border, praised mobilization, and emphasized citizen soldiers ready for duty. The piece commends the guardsmen of Dakota and Iowa as ready for war and urges compulsory training. Also brief notes on Derrick White’s death after an assault in Bismarck and visiting relatives in Moorhead.
Carrington residents vent frustration as Ernest Swearinger’s sentence is cut from 12 years to two and a half by the state board of pardons. Harry Wright, a veteran engineer with the Northern Pacific, died at 5 p.m. Monday at the home of Albert Renner in Valley City. He was known for operating a pusher locomotive here during the era of downtown through freights and later served at Omaka after the high line cutoff. Funeral arrangements are pending as contact with his children is arranged.
Mr and Mrs R B Ilustad returned to the city after spending their honeymoon in the twin cities and attending the St Paul Outdoor Winter Sports carnival. Wm Burchill of Minnie Lake spent Sunday in the city.
In St Paul on February 6 coal and fuel shortages plague several Minnesota towns while rail officials push to restore schedules. The Rock Island line reports no trains from St Paul in 72 hours and Southern Minnesota trains with coal receive priority over passengers. An Indianapolis wedding ties Misa Gertrude Cook and Roy Iverson to Arcola, Indiana, with plans to arrive soon. Andrew Thurston begins as city hall janitor.
In Devils Lake on February 1, Anton Lauringer a young boy was lost in a Christmas blizzard for 22 hours. His hands and feet froze resulting in partial or complete loss of toes and severe pain. The act was prompted by a generous but ill advised intention to surprise a guest by taking the guest’s horse to do chores. He has received medical care but faces ongoing agony and injury.
Valley City looks to host several conventions as state dairymen meet in Mandan, with E A Greenwood and other delegates invited by the mayor and Commercial club. Minot mechanics and blacksmiths are also invited to consider Valley City for their next meeting, as multiple organizations plan upcoming gatherings and the Commercial club secretary coordinates efforts to land the city as convention host.

Miss Jennie McDonald ended her registrar role at the Normal school on Wednesday and begins preparatory work for The McDonald Teachers' Agency. She will operate from the Beeman-Wagley block in Peake and Nielson’s office while offices are vacated, earning the well wishes of students and alumni. Ole H. Miller Peter Lowe and Ole P. Slattum of Nome visited the city Monday evening before continuing to Lucca and Nome to return home due to Casselton branch tie-up. Rev W C Lyon went to Finsgal Tuesday to officiate the wedding of Misé Doris Frazier.
Secretary of State Thomas Hall reports 3,720 automobile licenses issued to date this year, versus 999 by this time last year. State Highway Engineer Bliss notes Fargo vehicle values listed for taxation average $108. Fred Green and A G Becker of Bagels were in the city Monday evening.
Fargo reports a severe Sunday storm that paralyzed rail traffic across the region. Northern Pacific and Soo Line trains were halted or derailed with lines blocked, wrecking crews at work, and expected delays stretching several days as North Dakota branches struggle to reopen.
The city children’s chorus will present Hiawatha an operetta in one act with text by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and music by Bessie M Whiteley. It won a 9000 prize in 1912 and features music drawing on Vancouver and Omaha Indian melodies. Rehearsals begin soon as scores are prepared and city school children can join the chorus.
A Central News Agency dispatch reports American Ambassador Gerard has left Berlin for Switzerland and will arrive today. Washington confirms plans for Ambassador Bernstorff to depart the United States soon with about 100 in his party, sailing via Scandinavian ports aboard the Fred berg Eighth.
St Paul reports officials say the First North Dakota Infantry will not be furloughed and no plans exist to suspend mustering out around February 14. Berlin reports severance of relations, surprising editors as German Americans react to a possible US break with Wilson.
Washington issued instructions to American Ambassador Gerard in Berlin ordering all Americans in Germany to depart at once. The envoy was directed to inform U S citizens and help them exit the country promptly.
Alumni of the State Normal school in Barnes County plan a February 10 gathering at Kindred Hotel with a dinner, program of stunts, and a business meeting. Aimed to revive the Alumni Pioneer club, the event ties to the twenty fifth anniversary of Pres. McFarland’s service and a possible county homecoming during commencement week.
Jamestown February 2. A fire this morning gutted an apartment building owned by William B. Kellogg editor and publisher of the Jamestown Alert. Loss estimated in the thousands. Blaze believed caused by a defective tie.
Detroit Feb 6 The mustering out of the Thirty second Michigan Infantry at Fort Wayne was abruptly halted by orders from the War Department. The halt interrupts ongoing discharge procedures and delays veterans’ separation from service. High command has not released details or a new timeline.
Canadians in the trenches greet the United States break with Germany with calm relief and pleasure. The Feb. 6 dispatch notes troops expressing no surprise yet feeling comfort from the shift in U.S. policy.
London February six The British steamship Floridam has been sunk with sixteen crew rescued. The vessel went down after an incident at sea and salvage operations are not yet reported.
