The Times-Record notes an unconfirmed rumor of two railroad workers killed on the Midland Continental due to a storm. Auctioneer I A Harris confirms in Jamestown that an engineer and fireman died after the Midland engine toppled on a softened curve.
The Valley City public library reports a Washington request from the American Library Association for more books for soldiers overseas. Demand favors novels and Westerns by Zane Grey, Rex Beach, Jack London, and others. over 600,000 books have already shipped, with several hundred thousand more needed.
A wartime letter from July 22 1918 in France describes daily routines rain delaying work haying and harvesting by hand. He notes the French praise for American troops and predicts U S victory with Uncle Sam’s full commitment. He asks about farm work costs and mail delays and mentions leadership and morale.
Heavy rain and an intense electrical storm disrupted rail service. No city damage reported, but washouts on the Nome branch halt westbound trains, Soo line delays occur between Courtenay and Kensal, and a cloudburst at James town washed out tracks in the N. P. yards.

Lieut Harry Davidson of the aviation corps stationed at Memphis Tenn arrived home Sunday to visit his parents Mr and Mrs A H Davidson His year in service began on his birthday August 9 and he received shoulder straps as first lieutenant on August 9 a year later He described flying sensations high altitude dives and loops and said he enjoyed air service but would rather stay on land while his leave continues and friends greet his progress in army work
William Frederick Hendricks aged 66 or so died at 1 o clock this morning after years of illness. He leaves a wife and 11 children. Born in Germany, he came to America as a boy and lived about seven miles north of the city. Funeral plans not yet announced.
The first meeting of North Dakota state division of the U S Labor Bureau advisory board in Fargo discussed new departments and measures to aid coal miners and farm labor during threshing. Members from employers and employees praised state progress and proposed divisions for railroad recruiting, sanitation in mines, and coordinated workday staffing to ensure full shifts.
A light verse by L. B., the "Farmer Poet," features dialect lines about state origins, tax burdens, hospital stays, auto crash results, and excuses to dodge bills. The speaker jokes about farm life and charity while narrating personal misfortune and political indifferent stance.

The Times Record reports Major Frank Henry of North Dakota has joined the first battalion of the 166th Infantry in France. Official news confirms the transfer from the North Dakota regiment. The officer is praised for leadership and is in active engagement, with his father A. J. Henry confirming the move in a letter.
Professor Mc Laurin of the University of Saskatchewan reports success in making gas from wheat straw using a 300 cubic foot gas bag attachment. He says a ton of straw yields 1,100 to 1,200 cubic feet of gas and 300 feet equals about one gallon of gasoline, enough to run his car for several miles.
States Attorney L B Ritchie Sheriff Kelly and Clerk Harry Olsby took four prisoners to Jamestown to plead before Judge Coffey. Gale Casey received one year in prison for third degree forgery. Sidney Cook got a year and a half for grand larceny. Bert Voight was sentenced to one year for grand larceny. Conrad Walters, 14, was sent to the reform school at Mandan until he reaches age or is released.

Mrs. H Harper hosted Mrs. Charles Whitcher for supper. St Paul visitors Will Penrose and Erma visited Mrs. Harper. Missionary day at Mrs Rogers home. Deskins helped with Rogers work. Getchell family planned a Sunday visit to Oriska Borcherts. Mrs Brown visited Whitcher. social gatherings at Rogers home.
A WWI letter from Camp Custer Michigan dated August 15 1918 describes army life joys and chores Frank Trader reports fatigue duty laundry packing shoes and varied duties about 85 men per company assigned to tasks meals include white bread potatoes meat fruit and tomato dishes and a rare raisin pie for dinner with news scarce and a warm goodbye to his mother.
The government approved a total of 5 million dollars for drought and heat stricken farming areas to provide small loans for seed purposer. States allocated include Montana Kansas Oklahoma North Dakota Texas with 250 000 and 300 000 reserves. Loans max 3 per acre and 300 per farmer to be administered by Federal land banks at Spokane St Paul Wichita and possibly Houston.
The heaviest rain of the year delayed harvest and threshing in the community. Harry Davidson, oldest son of Andrew Davidson, returned from a camp for a brief leave and serves in the aviation section. On Tuesday August 27 a Red Cross meeting will be held at the Peter Faust Home. Jay Stillings visited home over Sunday.
