The passage proclaims Scientific American as the leading weekly on industrial, mechanical, and scientific progress with new volume starting January 4, 1875. It touts engravings of inventions, metal notes, recipes, and editorials, and notes broad distribution and usefulness to workers, employers, and libraries.
In the New York dan column the author argues there is no need to amend the Constitution to limit or extend the President’s term. It recalls Washington Jefferson Madison and Monroe, noting eight-year tenure as standard and that appeals for four, six, or single terms were rejected by the framers. The piece defends leaving the term at four years with eligible reelection.

Laws punished smokers in many regions, while James I sought suppression. By 1845 England and 1860 France spent fortunes on tobacco, and 1878 England consumed bread-equivalent costs. The U S uses 400,000 acres for tobacco and 40,000 workers, with world output near 1 billion pounds valued at roughly $500 million.
