After three hours of deliberation the jury found M. B. Shinn guilty of manslaughter in the first degree and recommended a twelve year term. County Attorney Brady closed the trial as Judge Brown instructed the panel on the four classes of homicide. Sentence to be formalized Saturday morning.
Commissioner J J McAleaster denies giving W L Chapman full authority in public service matters. He states Chapman abused privileges and supports Love's suspension, calls for Chapmans removal, and endorses BE C Patton as his successor while praising Chapmans record as secretary.
A conference was held to finalize terms ending the long street railway dispute in Cleveland after eight years of bitter contention. The proposed deal includes a three cent fare with an additional transfer charge. The company secures a twenty five year term. The report notes related flight activity in Mobile and a Centennial cup competition in St Louis with participants Honeywell and J W Alighted somewhere in Alabama.
Licenses granted to Lafatte Newman and Gertrude Worland of Centralia, Chas Logan Legtton and Pearl Higgins of Bluejacket, and Henry Ward and Mary Eaton of Elk City. Father of the Bluejacket bride alleges she is under eighteen and may contest the license.
In Knoxville on Oct 7 Senator Cummins attacked Speaker Cannon and defended Iowa insurgents who opposed parts of the Payne tariff bill. He urged changes in house rules and opposed further general tariff revision while defending protective principles. A Missouri railroad case in Muskogee, Oklahoma, saw interstate liquor shipments no longer protected from seizure, with local officers prepared to confiscate consignments.
Guthrie Oklahoma Cot 7 Minutes state charity and corrections commissioner Kate Barnard released a report on an Oklahoma City newspaper story about Vinita prison immorality. It cites affidavits from sixteen inmates denying the allegations, praising Sheriff Ridenhour for kindness and air breaks. The report concludes the Vinita guards are not guilty and criticizes the newspaper for printing the tale.
Associated Press reports at Ladysmith that eighteen bodies have been recovered from the Wellington Colliery extension near here after an explosion of fire damp. Thirty two men died last night, seven hundred worked underground, twenty five imprisoned men rescued, but many levels remain inaccessible and feared to contain more deaths.
Oklahoma City Oct 6. Grand jury indicted deputy sheriff Jake Armitrong and five others for grafts. Armitrong has been under arrest for some time. Other names released are under surveillance. Some indictments are for misdemeanors. no county or city officials indicted.
The United States circuit court of appeals affirmed the trial court verdict finding John R. Walsh guilty of misapplication of funds of the Chicago National Bank. The Chicago case was decided in Chicago, Michigan, with the Associated Press reporting the outcome.
The temporary injunction and restraining order against Commissioner Young from paying depositors of the suspended Columbia Bank & Trust Co. of Oklahoma City were continued by Federal Judge Cotterell until Thursday. The restraining order remains in force. C. B. Ames for National Life Insurance Co. of Chicago said the order is being ignored as Young opened the bank today and conducted business. Contempt citation may be issued after proper affidavits are submitted. evidence on this point will be heard this afternoon.
Senator Robert L. Owen and his wife of Muskogee Oklahoma returned to Washington from a three month Europe sojourn. He will depart for Oklahoma within ten days. The Justice Department announced assistant attorney general Russell will remain in the 26 000 land salts case in Muskogee for the government. The administration is confident the circuit court of appeals in St Louis will sustain the government in the one case pending there to settle ore disputes earlier dismissed by a judge.
Neligh Nebraska October 7 Associated Press reports farmer A G Rakow of Willow township found dead at his residence with a bullet wound to the head. A neighbor who had a dispute with him is suspected of murder in a case under investigation.
Grayold Peabody son of Worcester lawyer F. H. Peabody died from a revolver wound in Kanaan City Missouri. The incident happened in the night watchman’s office in a newly erected building. The watchman claims Peabody shot himself while handling the revolver while Peabody told an officer the watchman shot him by accident.
Washington hosts Dr. Frederick A. Cook with a grand welcome at the municipal building as officials praise his polar achievement while debates continue over Peary's claim. In Baltimore Cook receives a formal reception before a lecture. New York news notes Peary Arctic Club formally contesting Cook's pole claim and welcoming Peary home with honors.
Champaign Oct 1 The council of administration at the University of Illinois expelled H. D. Bumert of Muskogee Oklahoma and Arthur W. Ide of Mineral Illinois, members of the sophomore class, for alleged hazing participation.
Biwart Simpson and his aunt Mary Simpson faced a statutory offense charge in Kansas City after a month apart with their eight year old nephew. Hine Simpson, a Cleveland real estate man, aided police in tracking them from Cincinnati. Detectives arrested the pair yesterday at a Seventh and Oak streets residence as reports of their living arrangements and alleged theft emerged.
Gilbert Smalley a streetcar candyeres employee is held on murder charges for the fatal shooting of Rufus Connetta Monday night. He was arraigned in Bailey's court and remanded to jail awaiting a preliminary hearing. Neighbors and family mourn the victim as details emerge.
Associated Press dispatch from San Francisco reports Taft arrives this morning to review parades and speeches. A banquet and night parade are planned with brief remarks and reviews, followed by a long farewell in the evening crowds and activities continue through the day.
