Senate probes Sherman Act enforcement after tobacco case
Washington DC November 18 hearing before the Senate committee on interstate commerce raised questions about the enforcement balance of the Sherman antitrust law. Senator Pomerene accused the Justice Department of failing to enforce criminal provisions while pursuing civil actions, citing former Attorney General Judson Harmon and Richard Olney in comparison. The discussion touched on the dissolution of the American Tobacco Company and its impact on competition. Oklahoma City notes warn holders of 15 percent public building warrants about their payoff under a 2 million bond issue, as attorney general Westheld rules they are not provided for and payable in future years.
