Land Reverts to Northern Pacific After Eight-Year Dispute
Spokane March 20 The value of a vast tract totaling ten million dollars including 460000 acres of chosen agricultural lands in the Wallace district northern Idaho has reverted to the Northern Pacific Railway company by order of the general land office commissioners. The land was controversially classified as mineral land since 1891 after the railroad protested. After hearings in 1902 and 1905 and lengthy litigation the decision was made to revert the tract. The area lies south and east of Wallace and spans 20 townships. Evidence showed the land is suited for forestry and agriculture and was wrongly designated mineral land.
