A severe explosion at the Palau mine in Coahuila, Mexico, kills many workers and injures eight. Reported from Las Esperanzas mining district and echoed by a dispatch to the Texas governor, the cause is uncertain though gas ignition from a miner’s match is suspected.
At a Guthrie gathering the State Teacher's association officials were instructed to organize a northeast district teachers group. They set a convention in Vinita for April 25 and 26 with about nineteen counties expected to send representatives and roughly 1000 teachers anticipated to attend. Local citizens and the Commercial Club will handle arrangements.
In Nashville on February 1 the final motion for a new trial was heard for Col. Duncan B. Cooper and Rollin J. Cooper. They were convicted of murdering former Senator Edward W Carmack and each sentenced to twenty years in prison. The case traces to the preme court and continues as the Coopers pursue appeal.
The Commercial Club will host its regular weekly meeting tonight to report on railroad progress. Several important topics will be discussed and a large attendance is desired to help build a bigger and better city.
In Guthrie on February 3 the senate approved Russell’s bill creating a commission to acquire options on several proposed state capital sites. One site will be chosen by a people’s election, using $1 million from the public building fund to buy the final site. The measure passed 28 to 5 amid opposition from Sen. K. M. Roddie of Ada. The House also acted on measures including governance and drainage proposals and a push for new district judge appointments.

Sixty railroads in New York have informed 32 thousand firemen of the rejection of demands for a twenty to twenty five percent increase and other concessions. The roads say they will not arbitrate wages and reject further demands, per private Chicago dispatches.
Guthrie Oklahoma February 2 Senate passes six bills including the Yeager Strain anti gas pressure measure to prohibit piping natural gas above three hundred psi or by pumping devices. Also approved are bills on deer hunting in Comanche county, supreme court stenographer, fact finding machinery, optional written opinions in misdemeanors, and amended paying laws.
Kansas City reports a circuit court restraining order preventing depositions in Dr. Hyde's slander case against John G. Pasten executor of the Swope estate. Separately, a petition seeks two temporary orders to halt taxes on allottee lands in Ottawa County pending final settlement, with potential implications for homestead dilatements.
Officially announced today that tariff negotiations show progress and a bill for regulating trade between Germany and the United States has been drafted by the general council and introduced in the Reichstag.

State auditor informs county treasurer of House Bill No 2 extending payment deadlines for fiscal year taxes ending June 9 1920. The measure declares an emergency to preserve public peace and directs delinquent taxes payable by April 1 1920 with warrants issued as prescribed by law. Official notice dated January 31.
