The present census figures released today show Hutchinson with 9,379 people, up from 4,952 in 1900, and Coffeyville with 12,087 residents, compared with 4,952 in 1900. The numbers come from the Associated Press dispatch dated Hutchinson Kansas.
A revived multistate railway expansion plan gains momentum with C Olmstead exiting, signaling push to extend from Denver southward into Texas and Oklahoma. Fort Smith West, Wichita Falls Northwest, and Missouri Oklahoma Gulf pursue westward links, with bonds issued for Oklahoma Creek improvements and hopeful regular service from Muskogee to Denison.
The Congregational church voted last night to accept the resignation of Rev. J. B. Pershing and to call Rev. A. Wray of Carthage Missouri as pastor. Dr Wray, once a lawyer, became a minister and served several churches before missionary work that made him a regional leader. He is said to know Congregationalism in Missouri Oklahoma and Arkansas well and has many old friends in the denomination.
Claremore Oklahoma December 14 Judge Poe in Rogers County District Court adjourned session for illness. Grand jury was dismissed until December 26. Court rescheduled to December 19 due to Judge Brown’s absence. Mrs Brown’s passing reported after illness.
James OConnell, president of the Machinists Union, arrived to join a conference with Missouri Pacific officials this afternoon seeking a settlement of the strike on the railroad’s lines in St Louis.
Cambridge court acquits Hattie LeBlanc of the murder charge in the November 20 1910 case against Lawrence E Glover. Judge Bond urged the jury to err on the side of acquittal. The frightened defendant expressed a wish to go home with her father.
The Oklahoma Democrats in the special session caucus of the third legislature endorse J J Spencer of Vinita for door keeper of the United States House of Representatives. The resolution, passed December 12 1910, cites his party work and fits a formal appointment recommendation.
A warrant charging murder in the first degree was issued for John Feagle in connection with the quadruple murder at the Bernhardt farm. Sam Bailey, held for the crimes, said Feagle had threatened Bernhardt and used an epithet. Steel county sheriff moved Feagle from jail to Olathe after a briefing by Johnson county officials. Bailey and Feagle faced examination by Johnson county authorities.
Oklahoma City December 15 a deadlock over the capital site persists as the senate approved the Culbertson Heights plan while the house tabled the resolution. The conflict deepened with a concurrent measure to adjourn sine die and bids to move capital decisions to Guthrie or Putnam sites. Governor Tinkell remains hopeful to salvage the Putnam site.
Kansas City news reports John Feagle held by police as a suspect in the Bernhardt farm quadruple murder. He was examined but said little. Officers seek a Bernhardt farm hand feared by the victim. Wife and father plead his innocence. The elder Feagle asserts signs of infanity at age ten and attributes stains on his clothing to red paint from painting the house.
At 10 47 Wednesday morning actual visible construction began on the eastern Oklahoma hospital for the insane in Vinita after a year of anticipation. A gang had worked on the foundation for weeks and yesterday the first brick was laid in place marking the start of the asylum project.
Twelve men were entombed in shaft No 2 of the Leyden Coal company mine at Leyden Colorado after an explosion started a fire last night. Workers in shaft No 1 braveley dig toward the imprisoned men until fire forced retreat. Rescue attempts paused to fight the blaze as noises of digging echoed from the walls.
Congressman Kiel Cook of the Second Pennsylvania district died in Philadelphia today on December 15, his death announced from the city.
Associated Press dispatches from Washington report Mexican federal troops routing the revolutionists in Chichaubau and capturing Guror. At Rancho San Tiago near Padernalés, December 12, reports indicate a fierce battle with Navaro defending to a standstill. Casualties include at least 24 dead. prisoners were not taken. After the fight, villagers were questioned and thirty men executed for suspected revolt.
A lone bandit robbed the State Bank at Paradise Kansas and fled north after tying the cashier and four others, stuffing rags in mouths and taking all cash in the safe. He then bought a rifle at a hardware store and rode away on a horse.
Starved youth Emilando, 17, from the West Indies, collapsed on a New York subway after wandering the streets for a fortnight seeking work. He had not eaten in five days and was taken to a hospital where doctors fear he will not survive.
Washington December 18 Senator Cumming argued the current tariff imposes excessive duties and urged amendment. He favored modifying rules to allow individual provisions to be altered without reopening the entire tariff. Senators Aldrich Hale and others interrupted as a spirited debate ensued.
The McKee Construction Company announces dirt will fly January 1 for Vinita's new high school. Bond payments and cash from Vinita National Bank cover costs with completion by August 15, 1911. Ward school location faces dispute. another election may move it to favor First or Fourth ward.
Kansas City detectives questioned Sam Bailey Ike Whitsett and John Feagle I in connection with the Bernhardt murders. Whitsett was released and another arrest is expected within twenty four hours. Inspector Boyte said the right man is not yet found and the suspect is believed to be a former Bernhardt farm employee who left in November.
Bluefield W Va December 14 An explosion of gas in the Bond Coal company mine in Wise County Virginia today entombed twenty six miners.
