Greek King Constantine resigns under entente pressure and nominates Prince Alexander as successor. Allied troops occupy Blassona. 2,000 reservists guard the palace while Venizelos supporters push for pro war policy amid a divided Greek public. Alexander, born 1893, becomes ruler as Zaimis confirms the abdication.
The American steamer Petrolite, a 3270 gross ton tank vessel registered from New York and built in Germany, sank after a German submarine attack. One lifeboat reached shore with 19 aboard, including the chief engineer and third mate. two lifeboats are missing. The incident follows prior notes between the United States and Austria over the vessel.
The senate approved the espionage bill with an embargo clause placing export control in the hands of the government. News censorship was removed and other changes made. The measure, sent to the president, would allow the executive to halt supplies to Germany via neutral countries, reducing the need for a British blockade by steering neutral shipments to meet neutrals' own needs.

Decatur Illinois June 18 Wabash alled crafts representatives sign a wage agreement calling for five cents an hour raise for all crafts with two and one half cents for apprentices time and a half for overtime and an eight hour day. It affects 3000 employees of the Wabash railroad.
Constantine of Greece abdicates as entente forces tighten their grip on the country. French troops land in Athens and take control of the food distribution. Jonnart meets with Prime Minister Zaimis to secure army security and unity, with forces prepared to control the isthmus of Corinth and maintain order.
Washington June 13 The war department announced the need for 70 000 additional recruits to raise the regular army to war strength before June 30 1917 Forty five thousand recruits are required immediately to complete new regiments of infantry and field artillery Twenty five thousand more are sought at the earliest date to fill vacancies to sustain a 300 000 man force Training facilities are ready and the department urges single men aged eighteen to forty with no dependents and not in vital professions to enlist before June 30 1917
