The U S department of justice issued a final warning a few hours before registration day warning against attempts to evade the law. Attorney General Gregory said arrests will be prompt and no court delay. evaders will be punished and drafted with suspended sentences for the war period.
Baron Rosen, former Russian ambassador to the United States, urges a peace conference with the entente allies to find a basis for peace with the central powers. He argues the war’s original aims are hopeless and foes face a slow, exhausting conflict.
Sofia June 4 Bulgarian troops on the Macedonian front repulsed several French attacks near the Vardar River. The operations continued as Bulgarian forces defended positions and maintained momentum in the contested area.
Washington reports the national defense council will consider a plan to issue $4,000 free government life insurance to every American soldier and sailor in the war. The program would cover disability and allow higher policies via premiums. A government insurance bureau would manage payouts and installments.

Chicago June 4 Samuel Harris a Burr Oak Inn proprietor died at Passavant hospital from injuries after attempting to lower himself from a rope outside the criminal court building. The raid on Burr Oak Inn by State's Attorney Hoyne follows reports of drug use robbery and disappearances tied to the inn. Burial permit blanks signed by the village clerk were seized among raid documents.
Grand Duke Nicholas, former commander in chief, arrested amid royalist riots at Tiflis after reports of royalist movements. Earlier, he had arrived at his Crimea estate. In Petrograd anarchists paraded Nevsky Prospect with banners opposing authority and threats.
The Netherlands will lend 12,000 tons of grain to the Belgian relief commission due to shortages in Belgium and northern France. The grain will be drawn from afloat stocks and later returned to Dutch possession when possible.
London reports renewed British offensive on Arras front south of the Souchez river with good progress and captured prisoners. Paris notes five German attacks repulsed on the Californie and Vauclère plateaus with heavy losses to the attackers. Berlin says British assaults near Loos and Monchy repulsed as fighting continues southwest of Lens.
Washington reports contracts awarded to an American firm to build a two squadron aviation field in France for final training of U S fliers before deployment. Three fields near completion by July 20 will allow 500 aviators to begin actual flight training after their four month theoretical courses.
A gas explosion at W. P. Read Coal and Coke No. 2 mine near Herrin Illinois killed nine men and injured two. The dead include Ira Sanders and Otis Reynolds among eight others. Tom Cox and W A Brewer were seriously burned in hospital. Workers reportedly walked into an abandoned section where gas ignited. The mine employs about 600 workers and was not otherwise damaged.
Mrs Adolphus Busch widow of the noted brewer purchased 500000 dollars of Liberty loan bonds in St Louis on June 4.
Senator James Hamilton Lewis told the Irish Fellowship club that President Wilson will seize food or fuel hoarded for speculation and distribute it at just prices. He warned treason charges against those starving soldiers or squeezing civilians and vowed harsh penalties for such acts.

Two German submarines fired four torpedoes at the American liner Kroonland on her last outward voyage from New York. Two torpedoes hit the ship but failed to explode. Naval gunners replied, firing explosive shells into the water.

Tong hostilities in Portland and Seattle left two Chinese dead and seven others wounded, including two whites. The shootings broke the peace pact recently signed by rival Tongs. In Portland the downtown district saw two Chinese killed and another mortally wounded, while Seattle reported three Chinese wounded.
