Fire budget cuts debated by Board of Supervisors

County Administrator Doug Stanley said a five percent cut would reduce positions, with overtime reduction a key target. Overtime budget is 150000 but actual spending reached 230000 and 260000 in the past two years due to ambulance calls and disability leaves. An ALS officer missed ten months, driving disability pay and a replacement. Supervisor Dan Murray urged more volunteer help to offset costs.

Virginia right to work amendment urged to shield workers

Bell advocates a state constitutional right to work to protect Virginians from forced unionization. The Washington Post notes business groups back the measure for freedom and investment, while unions fear wage suppression. A second amendment would grant property tax exemptions for spouses of police and firefighting personnel killed in the line of duty, with a remarriage caveat.
