Supervisors reject Rivermont Fortsmouth Fire Station merger

Warren County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to reject consolidating the Rivermont and Fort Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Departments. A Springsted study cited severe Rivermont structural and staffing issues and Fort Portsmouth’s insufficient personnel. A proposed county airport-road facility at about 3 million dollars would serve over 38 square miles and 2,300 residents, but faced debt concerns.

Back to square one for school naming process

In Front Royal the May 14 school board meeting saw superintendent Pam McInnis withdraw the Skyline Middle School name proposal after apologizing for proposing the plan without full review. The plan had aimed to rebalance attendance zones so students bound for Skyline High School would attend the new middle school at Happy Creek Road and Leach Run Parkway, with future Warren County High School students affected similarly.

Tourism rises as Shenandoah NP welcomes more visitors

Shenandoah National Park drew about 1.3 million visitors in 2014, up from 1.1 million in 2013. Surrounding communities including Page County saw $80.4 million in visitor-spending spillover, an 11 percent increase from 2013, according to National Park Service figures.

Parker to challenge Murray for Warren County North River seat

Former Front Royal vice mayor N Shae Parker announces Democratic run against incumbent Republican Daniel Murray for the Warren County Board of Supervisors North River District. Parker, born in Richmond, moved to Warren County in 1979 at age seven. He left a 15 year radio career in 2004 to buy Hanna Sign Company LLC. Parker currently serves as treasurer.
