Weekend Irish Spring Festival tickets front royalty event

The Second Irish Spring Festival at Front Royal Volunteer Fire Department runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at 221 N. Commerce St. with 40 plus vendors, food, crafts and a beer garden. Activities include pot of gold raffle, blarney stone, face painting, Irish dancers, and awards for best costume and booth. Admission is 15 dollars with three beers and a lighted souvenir glass.

County eyes three cent real estate tax hike to trim shortfall

In Front Royal, County Administrator Doug Stanley proposed a three cent real estate tax increase per $100 of assessed value to address a $4 million budget shortfall in fiscal 2016-17. The plan would add about $1.2 million, funneled to the regional jail, the new middle school, and school operations, with extra $262,600 from Dominion Power and $73,600 in public service taxes.

Classroom crop project promotes healthy eating habits

Fourth graders at A.S. Rhodes Elementary with Meredith Miller cultivate vegetables in a tower garden. The aeroponic system grows up to 20 plants, started last December with seedling planting and measurement activities to compare with traditional methods.

Main Street extension estimate rose to 2.5 million

Front Royal updates the 0.75 mile Main Street extension cost to 2.5 million, about 1 million more than the original estimate. The project, a joint effort by the town Warren County and the Front Royal Warren County Economic Development Authority, targets the Royal Phoenix site formerly Avtex. It will be completed in two phases, with Phase One from the Avtex Kendrick Lane gate toward Kendrick Lane.

Warren County opens new middle school with Keyser principal

Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary principal Amy Gubler will lead Warren County’s new middle school beginning July 1, preparing staffing and furnishings. She plans to build a new school culture with input from staff and students transitioning from the elementary to the middle school while expressing affection for her current school. She previously served as assistant principal at Rappahannock County High School.
