Turnaround at Warren County Humane Society Sees Fewer Euthanized Animals
Warren County Humane Society reports staffing and board changes since 2011 improved reputation and procedures, cutting euthanized animals from 870 in 2011 to 411 in 2013. Despite gains, the shelter remains financially unsustainable and lacks no kill status due to funding limits. Authorities note per capita funding trails Fauquier and nearby counties. Spay neuter funding and public awareness remain insufficient. The shelter operates with 17 staff at minimum wage and runs a food pantry for residents in need. The board discusses a possible escalator boost of 2 to 3 percent annually in the upcoming budget.
