In 2021 the Lord Fairfax Health District saw at least 33 fatal overdoses while firefighters and police saved at least 200 lives with naloxone. Narcan is widely used. Virginia allows over the counter nasal spray since 2016. Fire Chief Henschel cites increased drug access and pandemic stress as factors. Frederick County reported the most uses and saves with Valley Health System providing the antidotes at no cost.
