The Syracuse native John White’s son left home at 19 to sail on the Black Hawk to Melbourne. After harsh treatment, escapes, and a stabbing on a Shanghai voyage, he fled ashore through China. He later lived in Hong Kong and China customs before saving enough to return home to his family.
