Minnesota bankers organize and elect officers in St Paul

About fifty private bankers met in St Paul as the Minnesota Bankers Association formed. Seventy eight bankers from as many banks joined, electing C D Griffith as president and naming H R Wells vice president E R Smith secretary W B Parsons treasurer and a twelve member executive council. The group aims to oppose a new state banking law requiring private bankers to drop corporate names or incorporate. Some deem the law unconstitutional awaiting a possible court test.

Death of a Former Governor John Hutchinson

John Hutchinson a well known Chicago lawyer died Monday morning December 12. Born Randolph Vermont March 27 1830 he graduated Dartmouth 1853. He practiced law in Madison and Minneapolis and served as secretary of Dakota Territory later acting governor. Lincoln era appointee United States consul at Leghorn Italy. Survived by widow and daughter. Cause of death liver disease.

Death of the Mc e governor Bodwell in Maine

Joseph H Bodwell died in Hallowell from lung congestion brought by exposure and overwork. The sudden death came as he seemed on the road to recovery after an illness. Born in Methuen Massachusetts in 1818 he helped found Bodwell Granite company and later ran the Halliwell works. He served two Maine legislature terms and was elected governor in 1886 as a Republican.

Death of Mrs. John Jacob Astor in New York

Mrs. John Jacob Astor died in New York after a four month illness. Born Charlotte Augusta Gibbs in New York sixty one years ago she became Mrs. Astor and a leading figure in old New York society. She supported Trinity church and charitable work and was beloved for her kindness to those in distress. Her son William Astor served in the legislature and as minister to Italy.

Memorial to Congress Praying for Dakota Statehood Voted

The Dakota Union Convention adopted a memorial urging undivided immediate admission of Dakota as a state.
