Auto loads of merry hunters depart the city in search of prairie-chickens near Minot. Despite a likely short sage hen crop, the bag limit is ten birds per day and many hunt with high priced firearms and skilled dogs. Duck numbers are expected to rebound, aided by favorable weather and wardens' vigilance.
Rev J G Moore announces speakers for the Jamestown conference October 10 to 16. Rev D D Forsythe of Philadelphia will represent the Home Missionary Society and Johnson, newly elected bishop of Africa, will represent the Foreign Board. Bishop Cooke of Montana will preach at the Sunday morning session.
Minot Electric company crews install a massive city sign for M. G. Olson, claiming the largest in the state. The 36 inch letters rise over a ton in weight, promising a bold storefront display and the city’s best electrical sign.
Mr. H. M. Hendrickson of Simcoe Ontario returned from a visit to Norway and notes sharp cost of living rises for laboring classes while wages climb slowly. He says crops in Scandinavia are good and flour priced at five dollars a sack. He observes reduced emigration interest among Norwegian youths compared with eleven years ago.
Hendrickson, a known Equity stalwart, returns to Genoa North Dakota expecting to run the new farmers elevator company. He describes Finlanders seeking better opportunity abroad while US prospects grow with water power driven industry development. He traveled by boat on a schedule that aimed to spot a blockade runner, but night passes prevented view.
The Wege Concrete Machinery Company of La Crosse Wisconsin will begin construction this fall on a large concrete building for factory and assembling purposes on the Soo right of way near Minot Hide and Tanning. The plan followed discussions in July with the Association of Commerce and was delayed for about a month before final arrangements. The firm makes various concrete mixers and aims to develop substantial business in the region.
Tom Price a Black man in Ellendale was shot and killed by Wm. Vaughn another Black man after a money dispute. Vaughn fired twice with a .45 Belgian gun. the first attempt failed, the second bullet struck Price mortally. Vaughn awaited arrest and faced a first degree murder charge.
A celebrated Republican candidate for president will tour Minot on Monday evening September 21, arriving by special train with the vice presidential nominee and other dignitaries. Hon. J. Frank Hanley of Indiana, noted orator and reform advocate, leads the itinerary, with Dr. Ira Landth and ex Governor Foss among the speakers aboard. Hanley’s career pits anti liquor policy against party bosses as he campaigns for prohibition in a nationwide tour.
A letter from an Alberta customer to a Grand Forks broker claims prohibition raised business, cut drunkenness, and emptied jails. The North Western Agriculturist, revived by Periodical Publishing Co, plans Farm paper launch from Minot with a 40,000 subscriber base and new linotype equipment.
The arrival of printing material signals the start of the Arriculturist. The first issue will roll off in two to three weeks, followed by an aggressive subscription and advertising push. Mosars W H Wigham and B Casts berg are in town finalizing setup for a new company expected to boost Minot advertising across neighboring states.
The Missouri river bridge at Williston was finished quickly with 35 boats and trestle sections laying plank approaches over main and old channels. Foreman Madison led rapid work across the current in under a week without accidents, drawing many spectators to the site near the Great Northern railroad.
Marmarth North Dakota Sept 1 Arrangements are set for a national letter carrying event along the Yellowstone trail to move a war letter from Boston to Seattle in 120 hours averaging 1 mile per hour. Emergency cars will follow the official relay to prevent delays and ensure the run continues through day and night.
McKinney-Fuller Motor Co displays a camp scene featuring a Dodge Brothers car with decoy ducks a tent camp stove coats and shells. City salesman F H Stoevener conceived the idea and crafted the camping display reflecting hunter camp requirements.
St Paul reports a pension plan for all Great Northern railroad departments based on continuous service will take effect September 16. W. J. McMillan, president of the Great Northern Veterans Association, has long pushed the plan after talks with James J. Hill and Louis W. Hill. The system will cover past service ages and voluntary retirement, with a veterans banquet to announce the change. The initiative aims to honor James J. Hill on his birthday anniversary.
d. W. Hunter plans to open a meat market in the Doloff block on First street in the former Ted Young cigar store. He expects to start about Sept 15 after purchasing fixtures in St Paul. The Hunters traveled from southern Wisconsin in a Dodge roadster, covering 671 miles at an average 33 3 4 mpg, with heavy sand roads.
James A Sheeran has been promoted to line travel agent for the See Line at Winnipeg and left for that city early this week. He is described as a capable and pleasant young man with many friends in Mix Not and the surrounding state. M Ward Wilson of St Paul succeeds him and has arrived in Minot to begin work on the territory.
A letter from Dr. Myklestad says he has served as assistant surgeon on the general staff at Berlin pits hospitals and will travel to Vienna then Norway for a brief visit before resuming practice in Fremont. He expects to return to his work here about October.
