Long Survives Freight Crash. Leaves Hospital for Iowa Visit

Fovert Long, once G N mat, narrowly survived a freight train wreck near by on November 4. Discharged from Deyila Lake hospital this week, he travels to Minot to visit friends. Surgeons thought he would not survive after hip and leg injuries. five operations followed. He plans to spend weeks with his mother in What Cheer, Iowa, to recuperate.

Servant girl saves babe at GA Luke Berthold

A servant girl at the GA Luke near Berthold rescued Mr Luke's year old son from a bonfire incident. The child was playing near flames when his clothing caught fire. Her quick actions and skirts wrapped around the boy extinguished the fire though he suffered severe burns.

Insurance Statements Expected by Commissioner in Ward County

Ward County publishers await arrival of insurance statements from the Commissioner of Insurance, due within days. Some 49 statements are reported, with 19 already issued. It is understood the statements will be fairly distributed, awaiting official details.

Corn Acreage To Be Larger This Year In Surrey

O M Champlin, a Surrey farmer, grew his own seed corn last year and plans eight to ten acres of corn this season. He notes much more corn than ever before allotting space for seed. Champlin is also planting sweet corn which periodically appears and disappears, with ears roasting along all summer. He expects a larger corn acreage in the area this year.

Miss Bessie Kane, superintendent of Mountrail County schools, was discussed as a Democratic nominee for state superintendent of public instruction in Minot. She could have won the honor but chose to seek reelection in Mountrail County, where prospects were strong.

Candidates must file petitions for county auditor and legislative seats by 4 p.m. Friday or Saturday May 28 or May 6 depending on posting. The notice stresses the final filing period and required submission times this week.

Minot residents observed Halley's Comet Saturday night near Fehe Westers and Sunday night about two hours later. The object appeared faint with a curved tail and shifting position, not seen distinctly. Observers note the comet will be too distant for naked eye viewing after this week.

W A Hunt a farmer from Drady North Dakota handed a dollar to a representative of the Independent and said I want you to send me the Independent I have been one of the jurors in the Noah case and had I been a subscriber this would not have happened I would not have been on that jury for a thousand dollars and as a sort of protection from other juries I want your paper I notice that my neighbors who read your paper were all excused.
