A two week old baby girl murdered by father Robert G. Sinclair in Stirum North Dakota. Sinclair confessed and is jailed in Richland county awaiting trial. The event occurred after the couple registered as man and wife under assumed names at a Wahpeton hotel.
George Graves, a former Minot school boy and son of I E Graves, now of San Diego, California, fights with the Allies in the Verdun trenches. He is a soldier of fortune with an adventurous spirit who has traveled extensively in Mexico and America.
Nicholas Chernos was found guilty of killing his employer George Rittle on February 10 and sentenced to 25 years in the penitentiary. Chernos, who claimed insanity, shot Rittle three times as the latter fought a kitchen fire, with one bullet piercing the liver and two others near the heart. initial reports suggested Rittle had shot himself, and a doctor arrived only in the afternoon.
J M Anderson of the Equity Co operative Exchange returns from Minot with a plan to charter a special train carrying 500 to 1000 northwestern farmers to Washington for the next year’s presidential inauguration. Delegations from Illinois Kansas Nebraska Minnesota and the Dakotas may attend to press for federal control of exchanges to curb monopoly, federal aid for anti discrimination laws, and open market access. A Eureka Farmers Club meeting elected A G Erb, John Lee, and Vitus Carlsen to lead a business committee to buy twine formaldehyde and gopher poison and arrange monthly gatherings at the Browns home.
H A Monagin notes the club’s support by Bergseth Fish Co as they secured a prize of 200 pounds of ludeflak at the Mid-winter Fair. The Minot Park Board and the Minot Art Club plan a joint resting at the Library Saturday to discuss home improvement and city property. Mrs Davis of the Art Club and Will Doolittle will speak, with a film on successful developments.
Youmans from Washington says he was sent by North Dakota Socio Equity to D C to lead the fight against the Moss rural credit bill. He reports he is busy organizing forces for the attack and hopes to kill the bill in the Senate.
North Dakota leads in the five principal grains for 1915 and shows strong livestock growth. The state reports total farm product value at 327 million with South Dakota next and Nebraska following. Grain output and per capita value exceed expectations, signaling continued diversification and growth into 1916.
J. A. Meyer, who finished an 80 day jail term in Ramsey county for issuing worthless checks, was met by a Ward county deputy at Devils Lake jail and brought to Minot, where he awaits hearing for repeating the stunt. The public believes his Minot sentence may test faith in justice as he flims his friends.
M. M. Powell, a Waterford township farmer, enters the race for county commissioner in the Second district. Incumbent B. J. Anderson will not seek re election, choosing the clerk of court race instead. Powell has lived in Ward County fifteen years and previously ran a Minnesota milling business. he plans a thorough district canvass. Senator Englund of Kenmare aided the 1917 summer meeting as he traveled to Metcom.
Dodge Brothers of Detroit will exhibit Navistock chassis at the Mind Auto Show, a product already shown at eastern events. The Northwest Motor Co. handles Dodge cars in northwest North Dakota and eastern Montana, with 53 service stations and a strong sales record, delivering 863 cars valued at $306,736 to date. The firm emphasizes quality, not price, and maintains close owner contact for service and advice.
Dr. E P Ladd, long serving faculty member, is appointed president of North Dakota Agricultural College replacing John H Worst who was removed by the Board of Regents. Ladd accepts and will lead the institution with emphasis on pure foods. He will receive desired support in the chemistry department and continues public service to the state.
Albert Butler of Kenmare pleaded guilty in district court to forging a check in the third degree. He will be sentenced later.
Petitions circulated in Ward County and surrounding areas urge county commissioners to rescind a 3000 settlement of a state taxes dispute. The case involved 11 000 in taxes and a 25 percent settlement under a now unconstitutional moneys and credits act. Lawyers seek to recover all originally assessed taxes and pursue action against the State Loan Company.
W A Mansfield is mentioned as a potential candidate for park commissioner with the election set for March 21 the same day as the presidential primaries. Mansfield's name is circulating in local political discussions.
Franklin Kauffman advertising manager of the Optic-Reporter surprised friends by secretly marrying Miss Tda Bertossi of St. Paul Wednesday morning in Stanley at St. Josephs Catholic church with Rev. Father Mabussir officiating. The couple will honeymoon briefly then return to Minot as the Independent extends best wishes.
Frank Morehouse a farmer eight miles north of Van Hook was found dead February 19 at Frank Kaczor’s home four miles north. Initially ruled a possible self infliction, a Stanley report says Morehouse was murdered. He planned to marry in three weeks and carried a large sum of money, which was not found on the body. The coroner's jury deemed the death a murder.
A 26 year old man, once living in the area, became ill after seeking medicine at Van Hook and stopping at Ruc zor's house. He was described as despondent and highly respected. The item also notes 1905 Grimm Alfalfa at Dickinson and Edgeley Substations thriving with no winter kill. A U C T Booster Banquet is planned at the Savoy with over a hundred attending and speakers including Secretary Trolhein. A wireless message carried from San Francisco to Honolulu confirms Mrs. Phil Myers travelling with relatives aboard a steamship.
In Iner North Dakota on February 28 the jury found William Bokovoy not guilty of first degree murder in the killing of James Black last October. The Kiel village marshal was defended by E R Sinkler of Minot as the state was represented by Thorpe and aided by Judge L J Palda and Horace Bagley. More than forty witnesses testified as the trial stretched over several days in district court with Judge A J Burr presiding. The jury included A J Engelhart W E Ebersole George Keller W J Shinn John Thomas A P Carver Ben Habeck John Theda Theo Rom Wm Frahlinger C H Wilkinson and August Nelson.
Hulse of St Paul Minnesota was awarded the contract to furnish plans and specifications for Minots new high school at a special meeting of the board Saturday night. The building will cost about 385000 and be designed for future wings. Hulse stayed with his brother in law C E DeNoon while in Minot.
Fargo crowd rails at North Dakota Agricultural College action naming John J. Worst as president emeritus, calling it a firing. The Spectrum editorial warns of losses to valued programs and urges external leadership, cleaner governance, and retention of Little Country theatre and other student resources.
