Corporal Hilder Ellison Writes From Front in France

Corporal Hilder B Ellison of the 73rd Company 6th Regiment U S Marines reports from Somewhere in France on June 21 that he and fellow Marines endured twenty days of shell and machine gun fire. He recalls advances against the enemy and the high cost in casualties while praising American grit. The letter, censored in parts, is published in full by the Independent.

Hagenstein Plans Lake Vacation In Cass Lake

Shirley adds another grocery store

The Shirley Grocery Co. opened a second retail store in the Sons of Norway building on West Central Avenue. The Western Grocery Co. wholesale stock moved to the building rear. Shirley says demand is high and the new store will reduce overflow. A rumored fish supply plan involving Secretary Holbein and Bergeeth Fish Co. is unfounded.

Mechanics Hold Red Cross Picnic at Riverside Park

A sizable crowd attended the Mechanics Red Cross picnic at Riverside Park on Sunday. Atty Moody O Eide gave a patriotic address noting France’s Independence Day. Master of Ceremonies Napoleon La Fleur praised the talk. proceeds from ice cream and Bevo sales totaled 29.20 for the Red Cross.

Minnesota Labor Party May Place Tree in Field

Virginia Minn May 17 Eney a Minnesota Federation of Labor at its annual session here today approved a caucus for August 24 in St Paul to organize a separate labor party and nominate a complete slate. Governors Burnquist and Democratic candidate Wheaton were called inimical to labor. A union with the Nonpartisan League was regarded as likely. Victor Power of Hibbing was the only name floated as a potential labor party candidate.

Joy Riders Steal Albert Johnsons Car In Daylight

Albert Johnson reports his car stolen from Minot streets in broad daylight. The vehicle was found the next day on the north side after a young suspect traveled 85 miles. A woman's cape was left inside the car and the offender remains at large. Johnson asks for information.

Southward gravel road project planned for city access

Preparations to gravel the road from the south to the city and connect with the graded road to the county farm will start within a week or two, providing farmers a single decent southern route.

Ward County Soldiers to Leave July 23 for Camp Custer

Ward county will send 128 young men from Minot and nearby counties to Camp Custer Michigan on July 23. Burke and Divide counties join from Crosby and Bowbells with staggered departures. others from Kenzia, Williams, Mountrail, Renville, McKenzie, Bottineau, Pierce, and Rolette travel on Great Northern routes via Williston and Mohall. Dr Newlove, now in Newark, says he was transferred from a Texas camp and is likely en route.
