Minot Day at Devils Lake Crowds for Chautauqua Event

Minot sent nearly 200 residents and the Minot Eagle band to Devils Lake for Minot day at the Chautauqua. The trip featured concerts, Fort Totten boat excursion, a bowling tournament, and praise for the grounds and entertainment. J L Smith was instantly killed at Ray when crushed between railroad cars. Smith, 23, from Sweet Springs Missouri, leaves three brothers in North Dakota.

Bryan Speaks at Devils Lake Chautauqua in 1900s

William Jennings Bryan, twice a presidential candidate, delivered two addresses at Devils Lake before about 14,000 attendees. Crowds filled the auditorium and a covered wagon served as a lectern in the baseball park. His talks mixed moral themes with notes on his political career and religion. Notables Hansbrough and Governor Sarles attended. Estimated proceeds reached 35,000 dollars.
