Chronic water main leaks plague Minot after a week of troubles. A pack failure on Helgea avenue left the city without water for two days, New Year’s morning leaks drained the south hill tank, and several basements flooded as crews struggle to fix improper pipe laps and packing.
The parcel post law took effect on New Year’s Day and the Mint post office is already busy. Mrs. Murphy the postmaster is to record counts weights and dimensions of parcels for fifteen days at every post office. City carriers handle many packages while others go to homes by drays.
Mrs. J. C. Youngkin died at her Valley street home Tuesday night after lingering illness from stomach cancer. Funeral services were held at the home this afternoon with Rev. Mr. Olem of the M B church officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery. She was 66 years old and is said to have been related to Queen Victoria. She was married about five years ago to J. C. Youngkin. survivors include two brothers and three sisters.
Former President Webster Merz lies critically ill, transported from an address in Colorado after a sudden decline. Local medical staff report he is in grave condition as authorities and family await further updates.
Robert Hunter, a prominent grain trader of Granville and treasurer elect of McHenry County, died December 31 at St Joseph's hospital from abdominal trouble. His remains were taken to Granville for interment by the Masons. He was 49, leaving a wife and five children.
Mrs Brinkerhoff died at her brother John Martenee home in Velva after a year long battle with tuberculosis. She was a sister of James Martenee and Mrs John Martenee. Her remains were escorted to Redfield Indiana for interment beside her first husband David Keltner who died thirty years ago.
Martin Jacobson supplied choice beef for the Valley Meat Market during the holidays. He raised 2 year-old heifers sold at $65 each after grazing on North Dakota grass, and two calves brought $26 each.
Mr and Mrs Martin Jacobson were guests of Senator and Mrs Welo at Velva on Sunday and the Welo family spent New Year s day at the Jacobson home in Minot. The families have kept their holiday gathering going for twenty five years beginning when both lived on ranches west of Minot. The New Year s menu included turkey chicken steak and lutefish with trimmings.
County commissioners plan Monday session to reorganize the board. Three new members join the body: B. J. Anderson from the second district, Peter Vandenoever from the first, and H. A. Sampson from the fourth. Official papers of the county will be a focus of business.
J E Dickey explains that his six children were found in destitute condition and says his wife J B Dickey had gone to Norwich to collect money. He claims groceries were paid and humane-society advances refunded. Arrest followed in Minot and the case was postponed until Saturday with potential dismissal if he continues care.
A B Kjontvear the first settler and postmaster of Carpio and Mrs Dokken traveled to Minot today. Kjontvear ran the farm post office in 1908 a mile from Carpio’s current site while Higson and Eling operated the local mercantile company and more.
The Independent reports Judge William Murray will convene a meeting of Ward county attorneys to discuss his plan to change the office modus operandi. He aims to secure a county jury to sit year round only when a dispos able case exists, and to hold a November regular term to clean up the calendar.
Work on the new Minot Implement Co building started this week on Belyea avenue. D A Dinnie holds the contract and Chas Swanson of Velva has arrived as manager. Old structures have been removed with completion set for March 1.
The Bismarck Times will publish a complete retraction of charges against E. G. Patterson, leading to the dropping of civil and criminal proceedings against the publishers. Police warn that untagged street dogs will be killed.
About thirty five Drady farmers met at Somers school house to build a large barn for the Burt Township Farmers club stabling eight teams. A feast followed with afternoon addresses by W A Peck and J M Devine, who discussed the consolidated school issue. Firemen's New Year Ball at the Armory drew an immense crowd with orderly, festive dancing.
S. A. Anderson a prominent Columbus farmer died from injuries after a shotgun blast in his yard exploded. He attempted to shoot a chicken when the right barrel fired and the rest exploded tearing his arm. blood poisoning followed leading to his death.
The piece hails J Pierpont Morgan as the money king after a money inquiry. It notes his Wall Street office at Wall and Broad streets in New York opposite the United Branch Treasury. It underscores Morgan’s restrained display of wealth and power.
Davis, president, announces The Northern Briquetting Co organized with $500000 capitalization by L M Doyle of Wisby and partners Valley City. A $100000 plant will be built in spring at Minot or Burlington to produce briquettes, gas, and by products for cheap power and broader manufacturing growth, backed by leading North Dakota financiers.
Rumors in railway circles suggest changes in this division. Ray McCondries, superintendent, may be transferred as a promotion. Michael Flannigan, master mechanic, also likely to be promoted and depart the city soon.
A fire department false alarm from a New Year incident results in the arrest of Payne a Soo telegraph operator on malicious mischief and he is held on bond to appear next day. Baltimore George Cook editor of the Columbus Reporter is charged with criminal libel by State Atty Fred Andrews and released on bail to be defended by Francis J Murphy.
Two young Surrey lads visiting the Bicoum farm emptied water from the tanks in the hot house. The incident leads to tighter supervision and prohibition on children roaming the farm buildings unattended.
The Minor Typographical Union No. 376 elected officers with H Frerg as President J A Beaudry as Vice President Otto Gross as Secretary Treasurer. The four dozen member group reports a $150 treasury and notes strong shop morale and only one woman member in the city.
W Bond recently returned home from Calgary after a serious erysipelas attack. His son Walter brought him back on New Year’s morning. he is slowly improving but remains very weak. About forty members of the local lodge visited him to extend greetings, a gesture deemed more effective than medicine.
