Assault Attempt in Stilwell Ends in Shot Wounding Girl

Deputy Marshals Horace Gray and George Marrs arrested Abe Hughes, 25, after a Christmas night assault on Miss York, a 14 year old white girl from Stilwell. Hughes fired a shotgun at point blank range, hitting her back. her condition is serious and recovery doubtful, with an attempted lynching narrowly averted.

Negro Soldier Attacks White Woman Near El Reno Okla

In Rane and El Reno Oklahoma on December 25 a negro soldier from the Twenty-fifth Infantry assaulted Mrs. T. Clifford and her sister Mrs. Hi Clarke. Clifford was thrown into the street as the soldier claimed the sidewalk. A large search followed but the attacker, in uniform, eluded capture and was to return to post to avoid desertion. Public fear and threats of lynching spread as authorities pursued leads and surrounding residents prepared to identify suspects.

Amalgamation urged for Oklahoma Indian Territory Republicans

Local Republican readers predict a harmonious meeting of the Oklahoma and Indian Territory central committees at McAlester next Saturday. J. L. Hannon is urged as chair of the merged body with strong support from Oklahoma committeemen. A statewide committee is planned when state officers are nominated. No opposition has emerged to a delegate convention to shape the new organization.

Strike Probable as Railroads Face Wage Demands

Chicago Dec 28 The managers of forty two western railroads facing a fifteen per cent wage demand from employees are likely to meet again today. With no action taken on fresh overtures the strike threat grows stronger as trainmen await management response. If no settlement is reached, a strike appears imminent.

Gas to Reach Vinita Within Two Weeks Says Official

Vinita Gas Company manager L. J. McNutt stated gas will be delivered within two weeks if no unforeseen delays occur. Three quarters of service lines inside the city are laid and twelve miles of line outside the city may include added rock blasting. The contractor has faced extra rock work. after mains reach the city delivery begins in two to three days. Applications outline connection and guarantees, including $3.00 for service line and $5.00 for meter deposit with refund upon return.
