Oklahoma Legislature Opens Amid Party Unity in Guthrie
In Guthrie Oklahoma on December 2 the Democratic majority quickly organized the first state legislature with William Murray elected speaker and Henry Johnston named senate president. Emory Brownlee was backed for president pro tempore by Republicans. Murray urged sale of school lands and a modernized land system, while Johnston pushed anti lobbyist measures. Gov Hinkell read the state address in joint session as Democrats bar professional lobbyists from the floor and set 52 standing and 3 joint standing committees. The Republican house named W H Chappell minority leader and a Bryan invitation was sent for a joint session address between December 15 and 25.
