A large man entered Mrs. Ratcliff's home south of Seekings Station near Muskogee and struck her in the face with a foot and beat her with a club. Mrs. Ratcliff fired five shots from a revolver as the intruder fled. Police and bloodhounds pursued through a gully toward a bridge several miles away but the chase halted with no capture.
Senator Warner of Missouri plans an afternoon talk with President Taft in Beverly Massachusetts about Missouri political matters. Warner faces reelection and Taft is eager to keep Missouri in the Republican column.
Paris reports a telegram confirming Walter Wellman departed Spitsbergen on August 16 in his dirigible balloon Thalia bound for the North Pole. The start had a favorable wind and he was at Hammerfest, Norway, awaiting travel conditions.
Oklahoma Governor C N Haskell told the St Joseph Ad Club in Kansas City that he has no political ambitions and plans to devote his time to his weekly paper after his term ends. He commented on a town hot cases prosecution saying they wanted an indictment and they got it.
Berlin reports Orville Wright arrived from London to lead a series of public flights on the army parade grounds near Berlin by late August. Emperor William is expected to attend, and Count Zeppelin may travel from Friedrichshafen by airship around August 25 to meet Wright.
Durant Oklahoma reports heat waves as 112 degree temperatures panic the town. Edward Rives president of the First National Bank collapsed entering his carriage and died that night. Managers Butler and Byrd announce a full fall winter lineup including Land of Nod Graystark and The Thief with dates from October to March.
Washington DC August 19. The agricultural balance of trade rose from 224 million to 411 million dollars yearly over twelve years under James Wilson. Farm wages and living conditions improved as the department expanded, interconnected state colleges, and experimental stations with federal work. The output per acre climbed for several crops despite lower cotton yields, while population growth bolstered demand.
A testing schooner capsized near Lemnenberg today. Eleven sailors lost their lives in the incident. Rescue efforts were coordinated by local authorities and maritime officials who reported the preliminary details.

The police vigilance was relaxed and beer was sold during the night. state aid may be revoked if the commission does not restore full prohibition immediately.
John Glimore of Muskogee captured the state championship with C. M. Cash a close second. O. D. Neville finished third in the event.
West Point Aug 19 By order of President Taft seven United States Military Academy cadets are dismissed for hazing Radmano Sutton a brother of Lt James N Sutton whose death was recently investigated. The cadets are John J Booker Richard W Parker Earle W Dentmore Chauncey C Devore Gordon Lefebrive Albert I Crane and Jacob Partner all listed as third class except Parker a third class.
Sapulpa Oklahoma August 1 The county attorney for L B Jackson filed a motion to quash the grand jury indictment accusing him of failing to enforce the prohibition law. Jackson suspended pending an inquiry alleges misconduct by the state’s attorney and claims intimidation and force were used to obtain suspension recommendations.
