Associated Press reports in Portsmouth that the peace commission met at 10 o clock forenoon to consider Article VII on cession of the Chinese eastern railway to China. The morning session ended at 1, with the discussion continuing into the afternoon and a resumption set for 7 o clock.
An Associated Press report from New York on August 14 notes a letter from President Roosevelt to Secretary Kin Matt J. Scott of the National Negro Business League being read in the city. The president praises the league’s work and its potential to aid race problem solutions more than outside philanthropy.
Associated Press reports Kansas Insurance Superintendent said he would ask the district court to appoint a receiver for the Kansas Fire Insurance Company. The firm, formed two years ago, includes several prominent Kansan politicians among its stockholders.
New Orleans noon yellow fever bulletin records nineteen new cases in the city and three deaths. Local health authorities urge vigilance and remind residents of preventive measures as the outbreak continues to be monitored.
TCO Newby of Mansfield Missouri met Seymour Siddle of the Commercial Club to explore establishing a woolen mill in Vinita. Newby envisions a $14,000 capital company with one third stock from him, and would manage the mill if located. Riddie will present the proposal to the Commercial Club for possible organization.
Burlington Vermont August 10 marks the state holiday commemorating the Battle of Bennington with a memorial tower dedication to Ethan Allen. Vice President Fairbanks delivered the keynote, while President Roosevelt was represented by Secretary of the Interior Hitchcock.
The National Reciprocity conference began its eight day session in Chicago with about six hundred delegates from across the nation. Washington August 1 Tams Bixby of Muskogee on Interior Department business related to winding up the Five Civilized Tribes commission left for the territory. He said he was satisfied with the visit and affairs in Indian Territory and expected the work to complete to everybody’s satisfaction. He favored admitting Oklahoma and Indian Territory as one state and predicted a rush for senatorial seats once admitted. He has not decided his own course and is not a citizen of the Indian Territory, calling himself a poor man.
About sixty vacant lots will be sold under Inspector Wright at Fort Gilson on September 1 with bids to the highest bidder. The unimproved lots were appraised by the government and will be sold in about 20 territory towns this fall. A noted medical advert promotes Kodol Dyspepsia Cure from Ponples Drug Store for indigestion and stomach troubles.
