In Chicago on August 11 John B. Coke, formerly a circuit court clerk, was found guilty of irregularities in handling office funds and received an indeterminate prison term not to exceed five years in the penitentiary.
A special council meeting quorums in with eight aldermen present. The scavenger salary rises to 50 dollars. Councilors push for adding a ninth grade and two more grades, delaying final action until next week. Water shut off at Frisco depot pending settlement. Bills for street work criticized. street and alley committee controls future payments. Plans and funding for a citywide street improvement program outlined with assessment district and bonded script.
FP L Burckhalter expects by evening to see all signers to the Williams contract on signing bonus notes to Vinita Auditorium. Up to noon only two had refused to sign and they signed for small amounts. Contract signed with Frisco gives block for auditorium building for fifteen years. Judge Parker to visit next week with plans being drawn in St Louis.
Senator S M Porter returned to Caney Kansas after a conference with the railroad committee of the Commercial Club on a proposed northwest road. The committee kept details private but Porter plans a favorable report to financiers who will send an engineer to survey the line within two weeks. Local backers insist the road must be built and Vinita and Jones must gain access to the northwest route through rich country, though exact towns are undecided.
Grand Duke Nicholas Nicholaieviteh barely avoids bullets while reviewing guards at Krasnoye selo. Shots came from the guard’s first battalion of sharpshooters. about 100 rounds fired. an investigation and court martial threaten 2000 sailors and soldiers over related mutinies.
The Commercial Club decided to build the bridge over the Little Cabin southeast of town. Captain G B White was authorized to oversee funding and construction, with subscribed funds and notes endorsed by the club to secure money. Timber is ready and roads are graded, aiming for traffic within a month.
