The Dodson Gould Fallis affray led to a morning hearing before Justice Steredith. Dodson paid 25 dollars for carrying weapons and 20 dollars for assault and battery, while Fallis was fined 10 dollars for his role.
In Stigler Oklahoma an inquest was held into the death of a man found by a watchman at the Canadian River bridge in a railroad water tank five miles east of San Point. The body lay thirty feet above the ground in the tank. Communication gaps hinder details. officials believe the man was murdered and dumped in the tank, but his identity remains unknown.
St Louis police concede no definite clue on Grace and Thomaso Viviano kidnappers. Joseph Pano remains in custody as trunks were shipped from his house. Miss Cora Walker plans White Oak visit over Sunday.
Washington reports claim that high tariffs aid labor, while unions say protected industries crush organized labor. Steel, tobacco, sugar, shipbuilding and others face strikes, lockouts, and wage shifts as reliance on imported workers grows and arbitration fades.
Congressmen dispute claims that missing Democrats caused the tariff conference report defeat. Champ Clark asserts the Payne-Aldrich Smoot tariff will not be revised downward and notes the average rate is about two percent higher than Dingley with a maximum twenty seven percent higher.
Taft signs the Payne tariff bill on August 5 1909 at the Capitol marking the close of an extraordinary congressional session. The measure, debated through March to August, becomes part of the law as both houses pass and the president endorses it.
Tolowa Oklahoma August 6 The tent within the State Federation of Labor ended peacefully after an overwhelming vote at the state convention. The rivance committee report calling for delaying elections due to fraud was adopted. J Luther Langston remained in control as secretary with C C Zigler of Oklahoma City named president and Langston reelected secretary.
White Plains Aug 6 Chief of Police Roger O Marin of Pittsburg testified in the Thaw hearing today about an actress who claimed Stanford White barred her from theater work. The testimony centered on delusions allegedly planted by White as part of the case.
County Attorney Brady reported from the state chemist that Amber Mead in Vinita tested 2 to 5 percent alcohol with a high of 5.58 percent while Brew Malt showed 0.06 to 1 percent. Prohibition law bans drinks over 0.5 percent. a temporary injunction was issued against Maddox & Creeksmore and enforcement will close remaining outlets this afternoon.
In Webb City Missouri Charles Hard a fireman was killed in a duel with Gordon Seeley a miner. Seeley surprised Hard at his home with Mrs Seeley. The confrontation ended with Hard firing a revolver and Seeley replying with a shotgun.
Harold A. Utley was recalled today in the Sutton hearing at Annapolis. A discrepancy about Utley’s location when the shot was fired was raised, and Major Leonard asked if anyone else besides Sutton fired the shot. Utley said he did not recall anyone else. The funeral of Parson Williamme was held at the family residence this afternoon with many attendees.
