Grottoes Boys and Girls Club Saves Funding Drive
The South River Elementary School Boys and Girls Club will stay open for at least a year after raising about $19,000, surpassing the $17,000 goal. Donations from individuals and area businesses, plus support from Pizza Hut Elkton and local events, funded summer programs for 117 members ages 5 to 12.

Tammy Lucas Indicted in 2000 Abduction Case
A Rockingham County grand jury indicted Tammy Renee Lucas, a former Elkton woman, on felony parental abduction charges for allegedly kidnapping her 7-year-old son in 2000. The trial is set for Aug. 30 in Rockingham County Circuit Court. Lucas was arrested March 5 in Cleveland, Texas, after a tip from her boyfriend and remains held without bond.

Shenandoah Imposes Ten Cent Cigarette Tax
Shenandoah voters approved a 10 cent per pack cigarette tax with a July start. A May 11 public hearing preceded an unanimous council vote. no speakers appeared. Stores will seek tax stamps, while Luray and Timberville already levy 15 and unspecified taxes respectively. Elkton also discussed a cigarette tax at a council meeting.
