Memorial Day origins and global adoption over time
Memorial Day honors nations’ war dead, with roots in many U.S. towns from the Civil War era. It was proclaimed by General John Logan in 1868, first observed at Arlington, and later standardized nationwide in 1971, while southern states kept separate observances. The piece also covers poppy symbolism fostered by Moina Michael and Madam Guerin, and ongoing customs by veterans groups and scouts at Arlington, Jefferson Barracks, Fredericksburg, and other sites.
