House of Straw and Solar Power Stuns Keezletown Builders
Builder Joe Yoder and wife Alta Brubaker live in a 2300 square foot home near Massanutten Resort that uses bales of straw for interior walls and ceiling insulation. The design mimics Frank Lloyd Wright’s usonian style with large vee windows and a bat-shaped floor plan while solar panels supply half the monthly electricity. A radiant heat system runs through cement floors and stone walls, supplemented by propane and a large central stone fireplace.
