Elkton names Aaron Hammer new police chief
Aaron Hammer, 29, a native of Elkton, was chosen by the Elkton Town Council to replace Kevin Whitfield as chief. Hammer joined as auxiliary in 2007, trained in Weyers Cave in 2008, served as deputy sheriff, and became a sworn Elkton officer in 2010. He was promoted to sergeant in 2012 and now leads the department.

Elkton faced a severe power reduction in the 400 block of Jackson Avenue around 3 a.m. on Saturday as heat pumps and electric devices failed amid near freezing temperatures. Town leaders and law enforcement checked residents, directing them to the Elkton Area Community Center, which offered shelter though none sought it.

Six Elkton Recreation Department dancers from East Rockingham Spotswood Page County Elkton Middle School showcased new routines in a 45 minute modern recital at the program studio on B Street. Professional instructor John Wittenborn led the group with seven days of practice. The interim winter residency aims to stage the June 13 15 East Rockingham High School production.

The East Rockingham Senior Center in Elkton, run by Valley Program for Aging Services, reports an excellent year and plans for 2014. Center hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday Wednesday and Thursday offering hot lunch, exercise, games, and social time with no charge to participate.

Elkton Sees Mixed Year With Progress on Projects
Elkton posted a positive auditor report noting its best financial year in years while reporting steady progress on major projects. The town advanced sewer line replacements, halted pollution from the old town dump into the Shenandoah River, and planned a Gateway Project at U S 33 and South Stuart Avenue. In December the council chose Kevin Whitfield as town manager and promoted Aaron Hammer to chief. The sewer upgrade is on schedule and no major state violations were reported.

Reed's Tire Partners With Elkton Soccer Program
Elkton Recreation Department Director Diane Johnson begins a new indoor soccer program funded by a $150 check from Michelin Tire Company. The six week program for ages 5 to 10 costs $25 and starts January 18, with coach Sam Woody leading sessions. Reed's Tire Center co owner Beverly Reed arranged the Michelin promotion offering free soccer balls to participants.
