Grant aids preservation of old deed books in Rockingham
Harrisonburg Virginia Town reports a $9,266 Library of Virginia conservation grant will restore four old deed books in the Rockingham County Courthouse. One book dates to 1871 and recordings recount private properties seized for Skyline Drive, displacing about 450 families in the 1930s. Restoration includes cleaning, rebinding, and online access to electronic copies.

Neff withdraws Keezletown rezoning request
Rockingham County businessman Bill Neff Sr withdrew a bid to rezone about 20 acres of a 75 acre tract east of Harrisonburg from prime agricultural to business use on U.S. 33 near Indian Trail Road after weak support. The Planning Commission had planned a Jan 3 vote but Neff pulled the proposal citing lack of momentum with county officials. Neff hoped for a 9,000 square foot office building with a tenant, though no concrete plans exist. County staff recommended denial to preserve farmland, designated agricultural reserve for decades. Neff argues land is unfit for farming due to red clay fill. neighbors counter that only a small portion is nonfarmable. If resubmitted, hearings would occur before a Board of Supervisors decision.
