More than 50 Rockingham County and McGaheysville firemen attended the viewing for Douglas Odell Hensley a charter member of McGaheysville Volunteer Fire Company. Kyger Funeral Home Elkton hosted a crowd including an Honor Guard. photos from his firefighting life were on display and a later procession carried him to Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Kyger Pence Funeral Home Closes After 128 Years
Kyger Pence Funeral Home in Pineville has closed after about 128 years of service dating to its 1884 opening. Founder Daniel Kyger died around 1900, his son Herman Kyger ran it until 1957 when Jacob Pence II took over. Pence III inherited it in 1999 and shut down last September due to staff and health constraints.

Fish Learning Project Comes to Elkton Elementary
Fourth grade teacher Ben Markel uses a $1000 Merck grant to place twenty live guppies and five tanks in class and across the school. Students will observe breeding, track traits across generations, and record male and female guppy characteristics to study heredity and color.

Rockingham school board approves secure vestibule bid
Rockingham County School Board unanimously approved a $195,107 bid from Dinks Construction of Harrisonburg to install secure vestibules at six county schools. The project targets Elkton Elementary Elkton Middle and Montevideo Middle with automatic front office door locks and visitor identification. Construction should begin soon.
