Students say 'so long'to summer in two counties
Rockingham County begins the new school year with about the same enrollment as last year at 11,300 students, while Page County expects roughly 3,534. Final numbers will settle after two weeks as administrators, teachers, and coaches hold meetings. A motivational speaker, Phil Bigler, addressed Page County schools, urging renewed commitment to teaching. Statewide No Child Left Behind standards raise reading targets to 91 percent for all subgroups, with transfers possible if two straight years fail. East Rockingham High opens with Principal Eric Baylor and new AP Mark Sweigart. Elkton Elementary gains new principal Rod Dansey. Spotswood High School appoints Seth Muraskin.
