Oak Grove UMC Reopens After Fire Ravages Shenandoah
Oak Grove United Methodist Church rises from a 2014 fire at Grove Hill AMC north of Shenandoah. A combined service marks reopening on May 3 at 2279 Freeburg Road with a dedication planned for May 17. The 650-plus member congregation raised funds for new stained glass pews pulpit and altar items and is debt free.

Family Convenience earns Elkton Business Appreciation Award
The April 2015 award plaque honors Family Convenience Store at 94 N Stuart Ave owned by Visha and Jay Parikh for Elkton property improvements. The Shell Station at the site opened April 18 1951 by George and Bertha Williams, who rented from the Covers on Rockingham Street, with later renovations in the 1960s adding a wash room.

Elkton welcomes memory of Bill McDonald at Country Inn
Norfolk native Bill McDonald died April 16 in Elkton at age 72. He owned the Country Inn Restaurant at 204 West Spotswood Ave with his wife Susan and was known for friendly chats with customers. After retirement he enjoyed coffee at McDonald’s and carved wooden canes while battling colon cancer.

Yoder Appointed to Shenandoah Planning Commission
During the April 14 meeting Shenandoah Town Council named Matt Yoder to the Planning Commission for the term through October 1, 2016, filling the unexpired seat of James Williams Jr. A plaque was presented to Lolia Camp at Luray High School and the chamber discussed the Shenandoah Valley Partnership and Page County potential initiatives.

Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Company honors 50 years of service
A public hearing reviewed the town's new Fiscal Year budget set for adoption at the April 28 meeting. Luray Page Chamber of Commerce President John Robbins announced a $25,000 Virginia Tourism Council grant and discussed efforts to boost Page County tourism. Robbins noted federal agency shifts away from Washington DC and prepared relocation packets. A job fair for agri tourism and efforts to recruit HUBZone businesses were discussed as walk-in tourist traffic grows. Bids for enclosing a bay at the maintenance shed were reviewed. Charlie's Backhoe and Construction Service bid approved pending licenses and insurance. Page One fundraising T-shirt valued at $200 was requested. Festival of Spring involvement declined. A thank you card from Page County was received.

Gabby Conley a 17 year old East Rockingham High senior carries on a 5th generation farming lineage. She started with a seven day old Charolais heifer given by grandfather Eugene Plume. She has shown cattle across several states and earned a $5000 WVU scholarship while aiming to be an animal nutritionist at Rockingham feed mill.

Elkton public finances show cigarette tax receipts shrinking after tallying 114,950 dollars in Fiscal Year 2013. The town council previously approved a 10 cent cigarette tax in August 2010 by a council vote.
