Grand Exalted Ruler T Gillis Nutter of West Virginia faces a leadership contest. Nutter has strengthened membership, bonded treasurer and secretary, and pursued reforms including uniform memorial day and broader district deputy rules. He led legal efforts to defend the order, gaining immunity and broad support among white and colored Elks.

Special to the Star Wilberforce O Aug 6 The biennial meeting opened Aug 4 in Galloway Hall with attendees from across the United States. Notable figures include Mrs Booker T Washington Mrs J C Napier Mrs Mary Talbert and Prof Scarborough. The event fills the campus, with emergency tents and decorated grounds. Professor Dett directed music in the opening session and Mrs Washington delivered a thoughtful address. A five dollar contribution from Twin City Charity Club and two handpainted plates for the Educational Dept were announced as gifts to the association.
