J C Comstock formerly of J Y Storm Co and L W Copeland formerly of Behanon Copeland Co form a partnership to open a hardware store in Noblesville. A new block location is under negotiation with a lease likely signed soon, plan to open by February 1 with families relocating in spring after school.
Frank Dukes and wife hosted a surprise party at their home north of Sharon last Sunday for Mrs. Dukes thirty sixth? birthday. The gathering celebrated her birthday and a forthcoming move to Wells county with a banquet of good things. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Strawder Dukes Phillip Miller and wife Uncle George Ferguson Ora Routh George McKinsey J. D. White Albert White Wm. Cones Sam F. Cones Mrs. Cinda Wilson and children Harlan Holmes and Archie Hutchens.
Members of the Friends Church discuss a military bill in Congress and form a committee to urge Senators Fairbanks and Beveridge to add an amendment. Beveridge had offered an exemption for adherents of religions forbidding war, and a telegram stated the bill passed the House. Rev. Frazer leads local efforts praising courteous treatment received.
Elisha Baker a 36 year old farm hand employed by William D Clark of near Colfax tried to take his life with morphine on Sunday night amid discouragement from heavy drinking. Two doctors revived him after he was found unconscious at 6 AM Monday. Baker, who has long struggled with alcohol, had spilled morphine on his coat, and he has warned the Clark family he might kill himself.
In Lebanon, the Lewis H. Jordan vs Thomas Lawler lease forfeiture suit was settled by mutual agreement under judge Artman and ex-judge R. S. Higgins acting as referee. The compromise cancels the March 1903 to March 1904 lease except wheat sown by Lawler, with Lawler to quit by March 6 1903. Lawler receives crops and wood rights, and must pay Jordan $20 to the county clerk within 30 days.
