The Horizon School Division uses video links to connect five to six schools with about 40 students online. Teachers in one school teach while students in others watch and interact in real time. The program aims to expand access to courses like Math 24 Art and Science 24 for small rural communities.
Rita Prosper-Moostoos recalls her son Trevor Prosper who grew up visiting Taber Saskatchewan to work as a teacher's aide and harvest driver. In 2003, at age 18, Trevor died by his own actions amid battles with drugs, a day etched in Rita’s memory after a late night worry and a discovery by her cousin.
Chinook Community Futures of Taber and its NexStep Community Training and Development program earned the Minister's Award for Excellence and Innovation on Sept 16. The project focuses on rural workforce development with a literacy emphasis, drawing local unemployed and underemployed workers, including Low German Mennonite communities, into training to address area labor shortages.
