Aug 23 report notes CN and CPEC trains paused after a union dispute. Federal labour minister issued orders to resume operations while Grain Growers of Canada warned the stoppage would cause serious damage to the grain sector and broader economy.
At the Aug 19 Taber council meeting, minor revisions to the Town nepotism policy were approved. The policy allows relatives to apply through standard hiring if qualified, bans supervisor/subordinate arrangements for relatives, and requires notification of conflicts of interest to management. The Chief Administrative Officer has final interpretation.
At an Aug 19 meeting Taber council agreed to apply for the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program with Infrastructure Canada, seeking up to 10 million funding for an 80/20 federal split and a potential Town contribution up to 2 million from capital reserves. The project would replace the aging small ice arena, modernize facilities, and address safety and code issues including fire egress, board standards, and an unregulated ice surface. The town previously failed to secure funds in 2023, and a second intake opens Sept 4. The motion, led by Count Sorensen, passed unanimously.
