Sugar beets acreage cut in southern Alberta in 2008

Surplus sugar stocks from 2006 and 2007 push Rogers Sugar to trim beet plantings. Andrew Llewelyn Jones says about 19 000 to 20 000 acres will be planted, down from 34 000 last year. A one year contract with Alberta Sugar Beet Growers Marketing Board raises prices slightly as 55 percent of growers plant beets.
