Troops under Colonel Dodd press into Mexican territory chasing Francisco Villa after a major clash at Guerrero. Pershing notes Villa likely wounded and separated, with uncertain capture odds and risks of crossing the border. Army scouts report heavy losses to Villa’s mounted force and lingering pursuit across harsh terrain.
Report from a field headquarters notes carriage tracks found on snow clad slopes near the coat divide, suspected to mark the return of Francisco Villa or the vehicle carrying the injured leader Hyer. April 1 dispatch mentions aeroplane and wireless links to Columbus and field commands as Colonel George and Al Dodd pursue the clue.
In Amherst New York Central wreck, 28 killed and many injured, engineer Herman J Hess of train No 6 is blamed by D C Moon general manager of the railroad. Moon cites the company investigation and ICC hearing as support. Fireman R B Turner testified the signal was called off as the trains sped through dense fog. The joint federal state inquiry continues with results due later.
Charleston April 1 Reports of 409 accidents were received this week by the workmen's compensation department. There were eleven fatalities. But three deaths have been reported as the result of an explosion in the King King at Kimball. Claims for compensation for four deaths were received today.
Washington Dec 1 The Senate debated the army increase bill with no clear start date for amendments. Borah argued constitutional limits on federalizing the national guard, while Cummins and Lewis sharply opposed him. Lewis attacked a proposal for federal volunteers, saying it would undermine the national guard and reflect ambitions of regular army officers. Pomerene defended a plan to create a national guard section on the army general staff as regular officers doubted the guard.
Official statement lists twenty-eight people killed and forty-four injured in last night's raid. Zeppelins operated in two squadrons and a detached ship, targeting eastern counties and the northeast coast. Fifty-four explosive and incendiary bombs were dropped in the east and twenty-two on the northeast coast. one Zeppelin was shot down after being hit over the east. Continued on page 6.
It became known today that United Fuel Gas Company paid 175000 dollars for 15000 acres of gas territory held by Hami Hrton Natural Gas Company and the Loraine Oil and Gas Company. Purchasers obtained only the gas production, leaving the oil production to be disposed of to other interests later.
The Daughters of the American Revolution announce a nationwide campaign to relieve destitute non combatants in Belgium and northern France. The drive culminates April 8 Belgium Flag Day with members nationwide selling Belgian flags to raise funds equal to a day's ration for a Belgian. About 100,000 flags ordered.
In New York an 18 year old baseball player Als bert Kennedy died after a practice game when he was struck in the head by a batted ball. He suffered a skull fracture and died shortly after.
Report from Chihuahua City confirms Villa massacred Minaca and surrounding areas. Victims include Americans Benjam in Snell Dr A T Stell Lee Lindes ley and Frank Woods, German Herman Slanken burg and British subject Donald McGregor. Two Americans Henry Acklin and unknown fate. Story says Villa captured Minaca Guerrero and San Isaro last Monday and executed every gringo in his hands while offering safety to those who did not resist.
Rodman Wanamaker will renew his attempt to cross the Atlantic by a new six motor aircraft. The craft, powered by 200 horsepower engines, aims for 100 miles per hour and a six person crew. Allan R Hawley announced the project naming the plane America after the original, with designs by Glenn H Curtis and W Sterling Burgess. A date is not fixed but a summer attempt is anticipated.
Ellenboro resident April Starr, 65, a well known farmer, was instantly killed this afternoon while walking through tunnel No. 35 as an east bound continental express passed.
