Centerpiece Christmas Flora Poinsettia Amaryllis and Cactus
A brisk survey of three December favorites the poinsettia amaryllis and Christmas cactus tracing their origins traditions and care. Poinsettias trace to Aztec dye and medicine traditions with Joel Poinsett promoting the plant in 1828. National Poinsettia Day honors his death. Amaryllis blooms span a rainbow of colors and derive from the Greek word meaning sparkle with Holland as a major exporter. The Christmas cactus Schlumbergera native to Brazil requires cool lighting and careful watering to bloom for the holidays.
