Early Tuesday at 7 00 oclock the Clinton DeWitt home burned completely with contents lost including a piano and clothing. Captain DeWitt had left for a township supervisors meeting at Lemmon and, upon return, found his house engulfed as Mrs Bergerer and grandchildren were led to safety. There was no insurance on the property.
A fatal stabbing occurred last week near Strool after Halmar Jorgenson and Mrs. Stefns lured Mrs. John Stefns. Stefns died Friday from a wound six inches below the heart after being taken to Aberdeen for treatment. Jorgenson and the woman were arrested. Stefns was not. A hearing took place at Bison on Tuesday as the community mourns.
The Demorest silver medal elocution contest was held Tuesday in the high school assembly room under the WCTU of Lemmon. Teachers from the institute performed as contestants with topics including The Vulture of Civilization and The Face on the Barroom Floor. Miss Georgie Wilson won the medal. judges were Mesdames Tillotson, Drew-Wilson, and McNamara. Music accompanied by Mrs. Wilson and others.
Last evening Stainers Crucifixion was performed with high praise for Lemmon's musical group. The chorus and soloists showed refined technique with notable numbers like King Ever Glorious and the Wilderness passage. The audience reacted with evident enthusiasm during the Chautauqua style performance. The Ladies of St Mary's altar society hosted a reception at Arcade Hotel with music and refreshments.
