A United Press report cites a Sun account of corruption and terror within census bureaus on Ninth Street. It describes intimate ties between clerks and officials, coercion against a respected supervisor’s wife, and efforts to ruin her reputation.
Maj. Jnc. B. Broadfoot received a $250 appropriation check from the State Treasurer for the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry. The armory project at $25,000 will soon begin, promising a showy building in Fayetteville.
Washington dispatch notes preparations for the Ecumenical Methodist Conference to be held October 7 to 20. Hundreds of delegates from the United States and Canada will attend as religious brain power from both nations debates topics like the influence of scientific progress on religion, ecumenism, university education, Romanism, and international arbitration.

Two Alliance leaders arrived in Binghamton to urge Gov. Jones to run as an Alliance candidate. The Albany special notes Jones telegraphed last night refusing to allow his name on the Alliance ticket.
The remains of the late William L. Scott arrived on a special funeral train at 8 o clock this morning. Business associates in the city received the casket and conveyed it to his late home. The funeral is planned for Thursday and the city hall and municipal buildings are in mourning.
Ex Senator Bruce spoke at the emancipation celebration in Wheeling West Virginia yesterday. Miss Elizabeth Butler 23 daughter of Senator Butler of South Carolina died at Highlands North Carolina of nervous prostration. Her remains were taken to Edgefield South Carolina. A Jackson Mississippi telegram says the Senatorial fight ends and George nicknamed Old Trace Chains will be re elected by a vote of two to one.
A dispatch from Baden reports a Grand Duke of Baden allegedly vows Germany will wield its sword to defend independence after maneuvers. The speech claims Baden troops will fire the first shot and win, stirring a major sensational reaction in Baden and prompting cautious European press speculation.
President Polk of the National Farmers' Alliance denies being threatened by ex Union soldiers in Wichita Kansas and rejects accusations of mistreating prisoners. He asserts he never led a prison or visited a Confederate prison and calls false reports of apologizing for joining the Confederate army in Kansas speeches.

Cyrus Hoover and Ezra Lowman of Dayton quarrelled over money. Lowman threw a brick, Hoover rushed him with a knife, stabbing Lowman several times. the wound is described as probably fatal.
A Windsor pub scene at the American House ended with Charles Harden Jr. shot in the left side after a dispute with Bob Lee Askew. Harden died within thirty two hours from internal hemorrhage. Askew fled and remains at large.
Mr George W Fudge superintendent of construction of the electric street car line was badly hurt on Hillsboro street when a crow bar in his hands was caught by a car wheel The pilot struck his knee and calf nearly tearing the knee cap and making a gaping wound He was taken to St Johns hospital His injuries though severe are not considered life threatening He is a Massachusetts native and a skilled expert with many friendships in the city
Mrs. Lockhart wife of Capt. John S. Lockhart of Durham died Monday night from nervous prostration. Funeral from Trinity Methodist Church in Durham today. She was daughter of the late Col. Parrish and sister to Capt. E J Parrish Mrs. Julian S Carr and Dr Carr. Survived by one daughter Miss Lillie. The family and many friends extend sympathy.
