Special to State Chronicle from Eton College October 30 reports Prof J L Armstrong of Trinity College gave a lecture on the Study of English. Fire Damages Cotton Car At Winston Depot And Stables Fire
A box car at the Roanoke and Southern depot in Winston caught fire, injuring twenty five bales of cotton owned by F. and H. Fries. The blaze origin is unknown. Also last night Greensboro livery stables suffered partial destruction but animals and vehicles were saved. Local Odd Fellows and Masons consider chartering a car to Raleigh for their Exposition day. W R Mason from Clarksville Virginia jailed for refusing to pay peddlers license tax.

Three Children Burned to Death in Farm Cabin Fire
Charlotte observer reports Phebe Atkins lost her cabin on John H. Howie's Crofts farm to fire at 11 am. Her three children, ages five and younger, perished or were badly burned. the oldest died two hours later, the second survived the evening but severely scorched, and the infant burned inside. The mother, distraught, was in the cotton field.

Captain Thorwegan reports the Oliver Beirne fire started by a passenger pipe sparked among cotton bales. The ship burned rapidly, passengers rushed to deck and overboard, many drowned in the swift river current.
