Train wreck near Hatchett kills two aboard freight car

At Hatchett east of here a coal freight collided on the line. The engine and caboose stayed upright but the caboose overturned. Two crewmen R A Rice and Crawford died. engineer J D Hen limp was severely injured. Rescuers battled flames as sparks ignited locomotives. Other items note redeeming treasury bonds and foreign arrivals.

Professors Illness Highlights Winston News From Winston N C

Prof George Markgraff a German born music instructor at Salem Female College was struck by paralysis at school today with hopeless outlook. Baltimore reports meanwhile note Capt S E Allen a prominent citizen and hardware merchant is ill after traveling north for stock. Grimm Brownstone & Improvement Company organized with a strong board including J W Hinsdale F M Simmons and others. Stock options offer 7 percent guaranteed on preferred stock and 40 percent of subscriptions issued as common stock with profits beyond 7 percent. Public property held to back the contract and three year half withdrawal option to investors.

Round Trip Fare to Virginia State Fair Sells Oct 26 28

Seaboard Air Line offers round trip tickets to the Virginia State Fair in Richmond from Raleigh Durham and Henderson at one first class fare. Tickets on sale October 26, 27 and 28 with final limit October 31. Raleigh fare listed at 6.35 dollars.

Northern Settlers Convene Adopts Resolutions at Meeting

An adjourned Northern Settlers meeting on October 22, 1891, adopted resolutions praising state press support and inviting Northern friends to attend the Southern Exposition in Raleigh North Carolina. The group praised Raleigh citizens, thanked speakers, and announced officers for the coming year, President G Z French of Wilmington and Secretary J R Chamberlain of Raleigh.

Penitentiary Secures 6000 Acres Of Land For Convict Farms

The Penitentiary leases 6000 acres from J P and J H Futrell heirs of Dr J R Pope near Scotland Neck for ten years at 2350 dollars. The plan is to employ 100 convicts to rebuild dikes along the Roanoke river and cultivate the land, with option to buy at an average 875 dollars per acre. Col Paul Faison led the board in negotiations.

Aerial daring and Edgecombe exhibit at the Exposition

The Exposition pageant features a balloon escape by Mrs. Dennis near Tarboro with a wide audience watching the ascent and descent. Edgecombe’s display highlights cotton, tobacco, dairy and diverse crops alongside mills and local industry. Special days for Southern stock breeders and state delegations from Louisiana and West Virginia are announced.
