A despatch reports two doctors certify that Charles Stewart Parnell died of fever and related organ failure. Funeral plans set for Wicklow, Ireland, with remarks on Parnell’s death from Irish leaders and bishops.
The speaker asserts Charles offered aid while she denied him comfort. She denounces her half brother Edward Stewart for attempting to deprive her of her home and keeping her from her son. She claims her son was killed by the persecution of Davitt the Irish World and politicians.
The senior class of the University met and elected officers: W. E. Rollin president, F. C. Mebane historian, W. E. Darden orator, T. R. Foust prophet, B. M. Gatling poet, C. F. Harvey marshal. A committee will consider a banquet during commencement week for all associated with the class.
Special to State. Canoni de Burumeron notes the Alamance County Fair in Suirlington with about 6000 attendees. He praises the overall fair, mentions the agricultural displays were strong though not as full, and reports fine races including a one mile bicycle heat won by Fitzsimmons of Greensboro.
Dr Richard J Gatling inventor of the Gatling gun announces a new manufacturing process for heavy guns. A stock company with 1 000 000 capital has been organized with 900 000 subscribed and 100 000 guaranteed. Gatling touts new composition and mechanical processes with high tensile strength and rapid production aimed at a test in about four months.
Staunton Oct 8 ex Governor Fitzhugh Lee says there is no hope of ultimate recovery for Gen W H F Lee. Alexandria reports Gen Lee has taken light nourishment and his condition slowly improves in the past day.
United Press reports about a Democratic rally at Cooper Union with an estimated 20,000 in attendance. President Cleveland presided and urged Democratic duty while Gov. Hill defended tariff and bi metal currency, denouncing the Sherman silver law.
A Sioux Falls dispatch reports Marie Nervins Blaine versus James G Blaine Jr. in a famous divorce case. The answer was served on Mrs Blaine as she seeks a decree and child custody with alimony. Blaine denies desertion but cites poverty and an annual income of $2,000.
About thirty thousand people gathered to hear the McKinley Campbell debate. Campbell denounced free coinage and backed protection while McKinley voiced support for tariff policy. The two candidates clashed on taxation and silver as dusk closed the session.
At the Great Ecumenical Congress in Washington on October 5 the Ecumenical Methodist Conference examined the Present Status of Methodism in the Eastern and Western sections. Rev. D J Waller and others led morning and afternoon sessions with bishops and reverends addressing regional status. A garden party and reception for delegates followed, hosted by former mayor M G Emery and his wife.
The Cotton Association reports that cold foggy weather across growing districts has seriously affected crops. It estimates a yield of about 3 740 000 cantars, with a cantar equal to 45 pounds. Health notes a healthy liver, and a medical product is urged for dyspepsia and indigestion.
